Digital Printing vs Offset Printing

Recent years we saw the emergence of digital printing technology, which raise questions toward offset printing. Many say, offset printing will eventually lose its market because of this new technology. Actually, both processes has their own characteristic. These characteristic then distinguish what’s good and bad of both processes.

Digital printing is the emerging one lately. It offers cheaper price, if you print up to 1.000 copies, thanks to its lack of plates and production speed that allows them to complete in very short time. Printing accuracy based on proof is something easy to do thanks to the capability of print details. However, the common weakness of digital printing machine is there only several papers that able to be printed. There also ink issues; often we saw cracks on the printed products. Furthermore, it is not efficient if we print more than 1.000 copies; it costs at least twice than offset machine offered.

Meanwhile, offset printing is the conventional process which has existed since decades. Its strength point is its printed products quality, which is much better, and the ability to print large scale at small cost. Offset printing allow customer to use wide range of paper and variety of finishing, depending on customer needs. Anyhow, its long preparation is the biggest weakness if using this machine; because of the need of adjustment and plate-making process. Proofing also costly and makes it inefficient for small-scale business.

Which one is better? No one can determine. Both digital and offset printing have their own strong and weakness, therefore those are fulfill ones weakness. Gramedia Printing commits to support customers’ needs and both services are available. For further information, dial (+62-21) 5480888 or 5483008 (ext. 2605).
