Frankfurt, Shakespeare, and Book Fair

Frankfurt, Shakespeare, and Book Fair

Frankfurt Book Fair is the largest and oldest book fair in the world. Nevertheless, the long history of the fair could not be separated from the work of publishers and printers, which was done manually at the beginning years until Johannes Gutenberg’s mechanical printing machine in the middle of 15th century. However, Frankfurt at that time lacked of neither universities nor major printing company. The key of Frankfurt is the location; the city is located between 2 major rivers, Rhine and Main. Therefore, it became the most strategic and important place in book trade during the century.

At the earlier years, Frankfurt Book Fair was not a designated book fair. It was all started from a big fair held annually; whereas the traded goods were metal, crystal, weapons, and even horses. Manuscripts trading were started during 14th century and made the way for book trading in the fair. Gradually, there were significant increasing number of publishers sold their books and it became the central of Europe’s book trading. Finally, Frankfurt Book Fair was commenced independently from the previous fair.

The great popularity of Frankfurt Book Fair also made great turbulence. Numbers of censoring policy, the 30 Years War which devastated Europe, and the emergence of the similar fair in the city of Leipzig subsequently loosened Frankfurt Book Fair from its position. 18th century was the last Frankfurt Book Fair took its place, until the resurgence of the modern fair after World War II.

During its glorious days, Frankfurt Book Fair witnessed the William Shakespeare’s poet. As mentioned in The Millionaire and The Bard : Henry Folger’s Obsessive Hunt for Shakespeare’s First Folio, many Shakespeare’s poet such as The Tempest and Measure for Measure  launched at the fair. Had they forgotten to do first publication, we would have had nothing from Shakespeare today.

The long history of Frankfurt Book Fair has told us how precious it is and such an honor for Gramedia Printing to be chosen as the official co-exhibitor of the biggest book fair in the world. We cordially invite you to Gramedia Printing’s stand in Hall 4.0 C73 Booth 1, Indonesia National Stand at October 14-18th 2015.
